At giant, we’re here to help you and thousands of other independent contractors make the most of your income. With the IR35 changes in April 2021 this has never been more important.
On Friday 20th of March, the government unveiled details of a job retention scheme (furlough) to help all UK employers retain their employees whose roles have been adversely affected by the coronavirus. The government guidance was updated on the 4th April 2020 including reference to umbrella workers.
Umbrella employees are paid a combination of National Minimum Wage and a bonus. Based on the current guidance, the 80% furlough payment would be based on National Minimum Wage, which we believe is unfair and we are campaigning to have this changed. As this is an industry-wide issue, we are working with trade associations and HMRC to seek urgent clarification that the calculation of payments to umbrella employees can include bonus payments.
In the meantime, we will be moving ahead by reaching out to and registering eligible employees onto the furlough scheme with the intention to pay the maximum we can based on the government guidance.

giant IR35 fee payer
If you are continuing to trade through your limited company after the IR35 changes in April 2021, you will require a ‘fee payer’ to pay your limited company.
The fee payer takes the HMRC financial risk of getting those payments correct with or without appropriate tax deductions, depending on your IR35 status.
Due to the risk many parties will not act as a fee payer. The giant IR35 fee payer takes away this risk.
With a smart mix of technology, expertise, compliance and care, you can benefit from our almost 30 years of award-winning specialist experience.
understanding your options from April 2021
If you are affected by the changes to IR35 from April 2021 you may be considering what your options are going forward. Has your hirer said that you are caught by IR35? Are you allowed to continue using your limited company? Has the hirer insisted that you go through an employment solution such as umbrella? Will your pay rate be changed? How will your net income be effected?
We understand that these decisions cause uncertainty and that you probably have quite a number of questions. We hope that this website answers most of these questions.
We have provided a summary of umbrella v PEO v fee payer options under the IR35 changes menu option.
We have a range of white papers to help you understand the off payroll working legislation which is driving the IR35 changes from April 2021.
In addition we have information on the good work plan which is a government directive which includes recruitment agencies being required to issue much more detailed information to workers on their contractual arrangements and how and by whom they are being paid clearly showing any deductions.
We hope you find these useful.
We recognise that customer service is very important to you throughout your journey with giant. Our employee support team are available from 8 am to 8 pm whether you are using the feedback function via your portal, live chat or the phone - and our technology is open 24 hours!
We continue to invest heavily in our own technology, from online joining through to your worker portal, ensuring your experience across any device is both intuitive and simple.
We also invest very heavily in our people, from the recruiting phase through to continuous training and quality control. An important cornerstone of our quality control are the scores and feedback we receive from you and other workers using our service. These are surveys which, using a net promoter score of 0 to 10, gain valuable feedback on both our overall service and importantly individual employee support staff.
Each staff member and the department as a whole are ranked and mapped showing clearly their scores and feedback. These are circulated daily and form part of our key performance indicators and staff reviews each month. It is rare that these scores are less than 9 out of 10.
With your help the feedback you provide allows us to continually improve our service.
